'IN CIRCLES' - HOLDING ABSENCE (2021) REVIEW

'IN CIRCLES' - HOLDING ABSENCE (2021) REVIEW

After detonating release ‘Afterlife’ back in January this year and prior single ‘Beyond Belief’, ‘In Circles’ began curiosity as there wasn’t a clue of what Holding Absence had to offer next. With the build-up of ‘The Greatest Mistake Of My Life’ (released on April 16th 2021), Holding Absence have seamlessly created a catalogue of singles that hold enough power to ensure everyone is prepared for their sophomore album.

The track begins its orbit with a tranquil energy, crafted with calm guitars and Lucas flaunting a soft vocal through ‘maybe I could’ve learned how to fly’, already setting the ethereal mood from the off. We’re then met with the track’s name inside lyrics ‘people just go on and on in circles’, then the track opens up to a very ‘Holding Absence’ track. Blossoming like a flower through a more weighted guitar, drums and once again Lucas’ fierce vocals. Lucas has this power of transporting you to another place through the strength of his voice, you can feel the vibrations of his vocal through this song especially.

Unsure if it’s intentional or not, but the track is aligned with Paramore’s ‘Last Hope’ inside ‘I live my life inside of this cocoon, just like a flower too afraid to bloom’ playing as an under layer of this track, similar to ‘but if I let go of control I can be strong’ that Paramore also use underneath. The track closes similarly to the way it began, with gentle keys of a piano this time, leaving a content feeling and adding to the perfect single structure, give a taste of their upcoming album.

‘In Circles’ exudes a comforting, dreamy feeling for anyone who listens and so, a gleaming release for Holding Absence. This track adds even more enchantment to their discography, ahead of the highly anticipated sophomore album ‘The Greatest Mistake Of My Life’ (16.04.21).
